Cocaine

What?! Seriously- I'm going into sugar rehab.

“White refined sugar-is not a food. It is a pure chemical extracted from plant sources, purer in fact than cocaine, which it resembles in many ways. Its true name is sucrose and its chemical formula is C12H22O11.The chemical formula for cocaine is C17H21NO4. Sugar’s formula again is C12H22O11. For all practical purposes, the difference is that sugar is missing the “N”, or nitrogen atom.”

Headaches

It's been nearly 5 months off of my migraine medicine- and it seems to be going well. I've been researching more about non-drug and lifestyle prevention. Check this out:

"Four percent of Americans suffer headaches daily, and scientists have suspected culprits as diverse as undiagnosed jaw disorders, genetic susceptibility and stress. But according to recent research, a sizeable and growing number of headaches are being caused by the very medications taken to alleviate them — and the problem is far more common than scientists had realized. Half of chronic migraines, and as many as 25 percent of all headaches, are actually “rebound” episodes triggered by the overuse of common pain medications. Both prescription and over-the-counter drugs may be to blame"

The New York Times also has a whole series of art about headaches!

Day 2

I'm in the middle of day 2 being sugar-free and I'm still pumped.

Living in Europe for the past year, I've really realized how terrible I am at making my own food! I'm not sure how I got away with cooking so little in Atlanta. Surely but slowly I am learning, and getting more and more interested in making things from scratch.

I'm excited to start trying out all the sugar-free recipes I can find - I'll be sure to share the best ones!

"I Quit Sugar"

In January I stopped taking Topamax, a drug I took daily to prevent migraines. While my headaches have been fine- I've gained vaguely 10-15 pounds back.

I fully admit to being a sugar-junkie but with the appetite suppressants in my pills, it was easy to get away with and remain skinny. Now I'm back to full fledged sugar cravings and I'm not used to watching my weight. I long for chocolate after every meal. Drastic measures are needed.

I stumbled across Sarah Wilson's "I Quit Sugar" book online and after a little reading, decided to start out on an experiment. The next 8 weeks I am attempting to kick my sugar habit and get truly healthy instead of just my old 'no-appetite but plenty of sugar' skinny.

Today starts Week 1- Day 1. Those cookies on my counter will have to go!

Better eating and regular exercise- who knows where this might lead! Stay tuned...

Sunday

It's sunday and time to bake - any ideas?
There nearly no ingredients so that doesn't make the situation any easier..

On a happy note - the sun is out! Only 50 degrees, but I sat on the patio and ate breakfast in the sun :)

Juice

I've been researching juice cleanses today. I haven't found any cheap options in Europe, but maybe one day when I'm back home.

Don't they look both yummy and healthy?

Bread

Today I baked bread without any flour.. just a lot of seeds and nuts. I definitely recommend it!

Just a bunch of various seeds and nuts, eggs, and oil. Cooked for about an hour and it tastes great :)

Harlem style.

The Harlem Shake is everywhere! But I have to admit this is well planned, and I do love some Gator pride!

City city city

Man oh man. I walked 4km home in the snow today. I know, just like a story parents tell about their childhood when they want you to appreciate your own situation. Yet, while all of the old European buildings are beautiful and this is a great life experience, I'm not sure I want to choose a 6-month winter long term. I miss the sunny parks, sunday brunches, lounging at the swimming pool, farmers markets and art festivals from back home. It's always easy to think the grass is greener on the other side.. but I'm seriously considering another transatlantic move back to Atlanta!

Yoga styles.

To get it straight once and for all..

From Gaiam's website:

Anusara
Developed by American yogi John Friend in 1997, anusara yoga is a relative newcomer to the yoga world. Based on the belief that we are all filled with an intrinsic goodness, anusara seeks to use the physical practice of yoga to help students open their hearts, experience grace, and let their inner goodness shine through. Classes, which are specifically sequenced by the teacher to explore one of Friend's Universal Principles of Alignment, are rigorous for the body and the mind.

Ashtanga
Ashtanga is based on ancient yoga teachings, but it was popularized and brought to the West by Pattabhi Jois (pronounced "pah-tah-bee joyce") in the 1970s. It's a rigorous style of yoga that follows a specific sequence of postures and is similar to vinyasa yoga, as each style links every movement to a breath. The difference is that ashtanga always performs the exact same poses in the exact same order. This is a hot, sweaty, physically demanding practice.

Bikram
Approximately 30 years ago, Bikram Choudhury developed this school of yoga where classes are held in artificially heated rooms. In a Bikram class, you will sweat like you've never sweated before as you work your way through a series of 26 poses (like ashtanga, a Bikram class always follows the same sequence, although a Bikram sequence is different from an ashtanga sequence). Bikram is somewhat controversial, as Choudhury has trademarked his sequence and has prosecuted studios who call themselves Bikram but don't teach the poses exactly the way he says they should. It is also wildly popular, making it one of the easiest types of classes to find.

Hatha
Hatha yoga is a generic term that refers to any type of yoga that teaches physical postures. Nearly every type of yoga class taught in the West is hatha yoga. When a class is marketed as hatha, it generally means that you will get a gentle introduction to the most basic yoga postures. You probably won't work up a sweat in a hatha yoga class, but you should end up leaving class feeling longer, looser, and more relaxed.

Hot Yoga
Basically the same thing as Bikram. Generally, the only difference between Bikram and hot yoga is that the hot yoga studio deviates from Bikram's sequence in some small way, and so they must call themselves by another name. The room will be heated, and you will sweat buckets.

Iyengar
Iyengar yoga was developed and popularized by B.K.S. Iyengar (pronounced "eye-yen-gar"). Iyengar is a very meticulous style of yoga, with utmost attention paid to finding the proper alignment in a pose. In order to help each student find the proper alignment, an Iyengar studio will stock a wide array of props – blocks, blankets, straps, chairs, bolsters, and a rope wall are all common. There isn't a lot of jumping around in Iyengar classes, so you won't get your heart rate up, but you'll be amazed to discover how physically and mentally challenging it is to stay put. Iyengar teachers must undergo a comprehensive training – if you have an injury or chronic condition, Iyengar is probably your best choice to insure you get the knowledgeable instruction you need.

Restorative
Restorative yoga is a delicious way to way to relax and soothe frayed nerves. Restorative classes use bolsters, blankets, and blocks to prop students in passive poses so that the body can experience the benefits of a pose without having to exert any effort. A good restorative class is more rejuvenating than a nap. Studios and gyms often offer them on Friday nights, when just about everyone could use a little profound rest.

Vinyasa
Vinyasa (pronounced "vin-yah-sah") is the Sanskrit word for "flow", and vinyasa classes are known for their fluid, movement-intensive practices. Vinyasa teachers choreograph their classes to smoothly transition from pose to pose, and often play music to keep things lively. The intensity of the practice is similar to Ashtanga, but no two vinyasa classes are the same. If you hate routine and love to test your physical limits, vinyasa may be just your ticket.

Yoga retreat

I don't really have the extra money, but I've decided to up my subscription at the yoga studio. I haven't had a single migraine in two months and I absolutely love the atmosphere of being there.

That in mind, I've spent the last hour stalking yoga retreats online and researching what options exist. Check out how fantastic one of these holidays would be!

The continuous snow and cold, wet shoes I wear home every day have encouraged me to search for a new boots.

I've discovered Hunter's wellies for snow! Classic Hunter boots with special insulation and grip for the snow! Add welly socks and I'm in love!

Sugar 2.0

Okay, this weekend was a complete fail on the sugar front. I was invited to my cousin's for homemade waffles with whipped cream and jam. Quite the afternoon snack.

Yet, this week marks a fresh start and apart from some dark chocolate it is going well! I'm going to add to the mix a goal of avoiding over-processed foods. In addition I have considered upping my yoga membership so that I can take classes more often.. I would love to be a legit yogi one day.

Web 2.0

We watched this video separately in both of my classes last week. Interesting concept at least-

Fun Photos

Saw some fun things on my walk today. Enjoy:

Sugar

Today is the start of an experiment. A week without sugar.. Can my willpower handle it?

Sunshine

Ok I completely confused myself yesterday and was definitely referring to Foucault rather than Habermas. Too much theory right now to keep it all straight!

Anyhow, it has been a beautiful day out today.. the sun does exist! There is hope for spring soon.

It's really quite amazing how much the weather can affect your mood. Or my mood at least. I walk outside and the sun just makes you smile. So here's to looking forward to spring and summer and a happy half of the year :)

Habermas

We have been looking at Habermas in one of my classes the last couple days.. He encourages letter writing as a form of self development..

As Habermas has observed, "Through letter writing the individual unfolded himself in his subjectivity."
Sited to Dena Goodman, Letter Writing and the Emergence of Gendered Subjectivity in Eighteenth-Century France

Writing out thoughts to the world in this blog can now have a real personal purpose!

Pants

It's official, I've definitely gained weight. My pants are significantly more snug than normal. I don't have a scale here though, and there is isn't one at the yoga studio's locker rooms, so I have no idea where I'm at compared to normal! For now my pants will have to be the only measurement I have..

Nostalgia

It hit me pretty hard yesterday that I've chosen to move so far away from home. The sun in Florida is a nostalgic memory when the skies are cloudy and grey for full weeks at a time. The stress of finding both a job and a new apartment within a reasonable time frame don't make the mood lighter either. Yet, the grass will always be greener somewhere else and soon the flowers will bloom with the long awaited spring. Life is what you make it and if I focus on making dreams a reality then I can make quite the luxurious life right here.

Morning yoga

I used to be really good at doing a yoga sun salutation every morning when I woke up, but I must admit that they are few and far between these days. I found this sequence of morning yoga moves through Pintrest today though, and I'm newly inspired and excited to have a new morning yoga routine.
